American Homecraft designs and builds decks, patios, cedar pergolas, gazebos and outdoor kitchens in San Antonio, including backyards that start out unusable. What to do with a sloped backyard

Terrace it. A slope you cannot use becomes two or three flat levels joined by steps, held by retaining walls. American Homecraft's owner designed and built exactly this for a San Antonio homeowner whose builder left a backyard with a six-foot drop from high point to low point.

The result was a tri-level yard the family actually uses. It is in the video on our homepage.

02

Why cedar works for Texas pergolas

Cedar resists rot and insects naturally, holds up to heat without the twisting some pine does, and weathers to silver if you leave it. Sealed, it keeps its color longer.

FAQ

Decks, patios & outdoor living: common questions

Can you fix a backyard that slopes too much to use?

Yes. American Homecraft terraces sloped yards into flat levels with retaining walls and steps. One of our projects turned a yard with a six-foot drop into three usable levels.

Do you build outdoor kitchens?

Yes. We build outdoor kitchens with stone or limestone bases, often under a cedar pergola, and coordinate the gas, electrical and plumbing they need.
